THE COMPANY
This is the mystery!

STORYTELLER
coming to the front
Mystery!

THE COMPANY
whispering
Mystery!

STORYTELLER
The mystery of who was kind to Jesus.

THE COMPANY
whispering
Who were they? Who was kind to Jesus?

STORYTELLER
When Jesus comes again to be our king, He will be surrounded by angels!
JESUS enters from Stage Right with arms raised. ANGELS, from Stage Right, come to either side, arms outstretched like airplane wings.

ANGELS
The good children will fly up to meet us as we sail down through the sky!
Angels take the hands of the first row audience members and raise them to their feet, shaking their hands and showing them how to make airplane wings with their arms.

STORYTELLER
He will sit right down on a glorious throne.

ANGELS
Seating everyone and then sitting down on the floor themselves with the rhythm of their words.
A glorious throne where kings / sit / down!

STORYTELLER
to the Angels
Not you!
The Angels stand and exit to both sides of the audience.
A Stagehand brings on a high stool. Jesus sits on it.
And Jesus looked out over

THE COMPANY
all the people in the world!

STORYTELLER
and He said

THE COMPANY
in a great / big / voice,

JESUS
Come, all my sheep!

THE COMPANY
(The sheep were the very good children
Three kids on Stage Left smile sweetly at the audience.

STORYTELLER
who followed the Good Shepherd.)

THE COMPANY
pointing to Jesus
That's Him.

JESUS
Come stand on my right side!
They do.

THE COMPANY
Yay!

JESUS
And all the goats

STORYTELLER
(The goats were the very bad children.)
Two kids on Stage Right make awful faces at the audience.

JESUS
must go away on my left side.
With their heads down, they file behind Jesus and The Sheep and exit Stage Left. Angels escort them out, walking tall, like guards with their arms folded.

THE SHEEP
Oh, how very sad!

JESUS
Yes, how very, very sad! But come, my happy sheep! Come and be kings and queens with me!

BOY SHEEP
Kings?

GIRL SHEEP
And queens?

STORYTELLER
Can you imagine that? They were surprised!

ALL THE SHEEP
Why?

ONE SHEEP (THE FEEDER)
What did we do that was so great?

JESUS
I was hungry, and you fed me.

THE COMPANY
What?

JESUS
Sick, and you visited me.

THE COMPANY
What?

JESUS
I was cold, and you gave me clothes.

THE COMPANY
Naw!

JESUS
A stranger, and you took me in.

THE COMPANY
When?

STORYTELLER
Wow!

THE COMPANY
What a mystery!

Begin Music: "When You're Kind" (sting)

STORYTELLER
Maybe we better go back in time to search for...you know,

THE COMPANY
clues!
Jesus exits, and the company spreads around the room and into the audience, looking for clues.

STORYTELLER
Hey you guys! Watch the sheep! That's where the clues are.

THE COMPANY
Oh. Yeah. Thanks.

THE FEEDER
strolling on with a lunchbox, as THE HUNGRY KID sits down on the stool and turns his/her lunchbox upside down.
I don't know how I'm supposed to give anybody any clues!

THE HUNGRY KID
I can't believe this!

THE COMPANY
What?

THE FEEDER
to the company
Shh! Can't you see he's/she's sad?

THE COMPANY
Sorry.

THE FEEDER
What can't you believe?

THE HUNGRY KID
My mom forgot to put anything in my lunchbox!

STORYTELLER
And you know how that feels.

The Company crowds nearer to the front, holding their bellies and groaning.

THE FEEDER
looking in his/her own lunchbox
Boy, I sure am glad my mom made cupcakes.

THE COMPANY
Yes?

THE FEEDER
Here. You can have some of mine.

THE HUNGRY KID
Oh! Thank you!
They exit, and The Feeder waits at the back of the audience. The Hungry Kid will rejoin The Company near the front.

JESUS
Yes, thank you.

THE COMPANY
all turning to Jesus
What?

STORYTELLER
I think that was a clue!

THE COMPANY
Woh!

THE VISITOR
pushing through the company
Look out! Coming through!

THE COMPANY
What's the rush?

THE VISITOR
I don't have time to look for clues. My friend just got their tonsils out.

THE COMPANY
Eew! They can't even play.

THE VISITOR
I know. That's why I'm going over there. I brought a book to read out loud.
The Visitor exits quickly, to wait at the back of the audience.

JESUS
calling after
Thank you.

All the company turns to Jesus.

STORYTELLER
to the audience
Another clue?

THE COLD KID climbs onto the stool and shivers. THE CLOTHER passes by.

THE CLOTHER
Hey, are you alright?

THE COLD KID
I'm pretty c-c-c-c-cold.

THE CLOTHER
Here, you can wear my coat.

THE COLD KID
Th-th-thanks!
They turn to exit.

JESUS
Thanks for the coat.

All the company turns to Jesus.

THE CLOTHER
as they exit
Let's walk to my house. Walking makes you warm.

The Clother will wait at the back of the audience and The Cold Kid will rejoin The Company near the front.

THE STRANGER
Hey, can I look for clues?

THE COMPANY
Who are you?

THE STRANGER
Just a kid.

ONE OF THE COMPANY
But your clothes are kinda funny.

ANOTHER OF THE COMPANY
And you don't live by us.

STILL ANOTHER OF THE COMPANY
And you look a little different.

THE COMPANY
(Gasp!)
whispered
Different!
All turn away from The Stranger. The Sheep enter.

THE SHEEP
Hi!

THE STRANGER
Hi.

THE SHEEP
Who are you?

THE STRANGER
Oh. Nobody, I guess.

THE FEEDER
Nobody?

THE VISITOR
Nobody's nobody.

THE CLOTHER
Everybody's a child of God.

THE STRANGER
Wow.

ALL THREE SHEEP
Be our friend!

THE STRANGER
looking at the backs of The Company
What about them?

THE COMPANY
not turning around
We're looking for clues!

THE SHEEP
to The Stranger
We're looking for Jesus.

STORYTELLER
turning around
You found Him.

THE COMPANY
turning around
Where?

STORYTELLER
pointing to The Stranger
Right there!

pointing to The Hungry Kid
And there!

THE COMPANY
pointing to The Cold Kid
And there?

JESUS
entering
Yes. You have solved the mystery.

THE COMPANY
What do you mean?

JESUS
sings
IF YOU'RE KIND AND GENTLE TO THE ONES I LOVE,
YOU ARE KIND AND GOOD TO ME.

STORYTELLER
But isn't that everybody? Don't you love everybody?

JESUS
Oh yes, everybody.

THE COMPANY
Sing once together, then in a round, finally inviting the audience to join.
IF YOU'RE KIND AND GENTLE TO THE ONES HE LOVES,
YOU ARE KIND AND GOOD TO HIM...
