THE PLANEMAKER is a magical musical story designed to re-awaken childhood's dreams. Critically acclaimed in performances across the nation, "The Planemaker" is about a small boy, Lucas Lightbrow, who dreams that he can fly, maybe even out to the stars.
Two joys consume his young life--courting lovely Amy Fletcher and building wild flying machines out of other people's junk--but his planes won't fly, and he loses Amy at the birth of their only child. Lucas sends his son to be raised by city relatives, tends his farm alone, and gets old and empty in an uncaring world. Then his mysterious grandson comes to visit, finds the forgotten planes, and brings the old man's dream to life again, sending him finally on a breathtaking celestial flight back to his beloved Amy. It's been called "the most unbelievable story you'll ever believe in." Story and songs were written by Payne and partner Guy Randle.
"Marvin Payne blends the skill acquired in the creation of fourteen albums of his original songs, writing for several internationally-known artists, and acting in a broad range of plays and films to make this one-man stage fantasy fly. 'Planemaker' soars with wit and sensitivity. Payne has an unusual ability to communicate feelings, whether it be with his expressive eyes, his excellent timing in delivering lines, or his vocals. The script requires Payne to bounce back and forth between the roles, but bounce he does not. The transitions are more like the smooth, quiet meshing of gears. He is on the stage for nearly 90 minutes non-stop, and the audience's attention is riveted to this master storyteller." --Laurie Williams Sowby, Deseret News.

Spend an evening with legendary J. Golden Kimball, the most talked-about church authority since Jonah was regurgitated onto the beach. James Arrington crafted this hilarious and touching one-man show from the colorful words of J. Golden himself.
"You must see 'J. Golden.' Why? First of all, it stars Marvin Payne, who is, in one word, incredible. He expertly adopts the high-pitched voice of J. Golden, and is very convincing from the moment he appears. For those of who know Marvin as a wonderful singer, one scene in the show is particularly memorable. J. Golden wasn't the world's greatest singer, and Marvin does a very good job of singing off-key. A robust man in his early 50's, Marvin has all the old-age moves of J. Golden down to a "T": the shuffling walk, the measured steps, and the tentative searching to make sure he's actually standing in front of a chair before collapsing into it, a frail bag of bones obviously glad to get off his feet. Second, Golden's talks are peppered with cowboy vernacular and, yes, the occasional swear word, for which Golden profusely apologizes but just can't seem to curtail. He was the common man's General Authority, in that he appears to be no better or worse than the average rank and file member. Third, the play is written by James Arrington, he of Brother Brigham and Farley Family fame. James has written a marvelously funny, moving, and inspirational monologue about one of the great characters of the Restoration. You will not be disappointed.

Marci Gerratt making magic at Babymoon
A lot of people have the simple dream of hearing their songs recorded professionally. I've been operating Babymoon Recording since 1984, having done before that about 15 years of serious audio production (Below, you can read about larger-scale work, and find a voice-over demo). I've particularly enjoyed helping people with little or no recording experience. It's a zillion-track Pro Tools digital system that can send you out the door with a handful of CDs of your music, or a master for mass duplication.
There are two rates. If you're making all the magic and I'm just recording it, that's $48 an hour. If you need me to be creatively involved, anywhere from playing along on harmonica to supervising the whole project ("producing") and even coming up with arrangements involving guitars, bass, keyboards, percussion, and digitally-generated orchestrations, the charge jumps to $64 an hour. A fun project has been working with a guy who hums (and whistles!) the songs he's made. He shows up with mere words on a page. He has enough music in himself to communicate the tune to me--then the fun begins. It's work I love. I'd love to do it with you. (I'd even love it if you were a gifted and seasoned professional, because I record them, too.)
Email me at babymoon@me.com with any questions.
You do have to come to Utah, of course. But then, people have.
[IMPORTANT NOTE: It won't mean I don't love you, but I'll refuse to record anything that's sexually explicit, needlessly violent, or destructively disrespectful.]
CLIENTS WITH AUDIENCES ON A NATIONAL SCALE HAVE INCLUDED:
• Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, for whom I directed (and often performed in) 200 episodes of their "Share the Music" series for elementary school children. (Recorded at Rosewood Recording)
• Gibbs Smith Publisher, for whom I contracted to produce and voice the audio versions of ten hefty social studies textbooks for grades 4 through 7.
• Random House (recorded at WordPerfect) for whom I pronounced a quarter of the words in their unabridged dictionary. (This would be about 33,000 words.)
• Peace Mountain Mediaworks, for whom I, with Melanie and Roger Hoffman and Steven Kapp Perry, wrote, produced, directed, and performed in 37 instructional audio adventures for children, including "Scripture Scouts" and "The Allabout Family."
• Richard & Linda Eyre, authors of the Simon and Schuster best-selling book, "Teaching Your Children Values," for whom I was a principal collaborator in writing, producing, directing, and performing in the companion audio series for children, consisting of 12 episodes of "Alexander's Amazing Adventures!"
• American Legacy Publishing, for whom I wrote and recorded all the songs supporting their new curriculum for pre-Kindergarten children.
"Look at me now. I'm a grown-up bug,
With six legs reachin' out to give you a hug!"
• Uncounted novels and instructional books for local publishers with international, but niche, audiences. Anyone interested in performance credentials should check out the "Actor's Bio" on this site. Find a *voice-over demo below. All the voices are mine except for the "ringside announcer" in the last bit, who is played by Bob Evans
A piece I wrote with a student, Joey Brown. I'm playing all the instruments.
